“Market Day” – print on canvas

Some of my favorite memories come from watching the women at the markets back home — strong, grounded, and full of grace. Market Day was inspired by those women who, day after day, bring color and life to the streets of Jamaica. They are mothers, entrepreneurs, and storytellers all at once — the quiet backbone of island life.

In this piece, a woman sits proudly among baskets of fruit and vegetables — oranges, bananas, breadfruit, limes, and yams spread out before her on a bright blue cloth. Her daughter stands close by, clutching a small handmade doll, learning from her mother the rhythm of work and independence. Behind them, the world moves at its own pace — a man sells produce from his old truck, a couple rides by on a motorcycle, and life hums softly in the background.

I wanted this painting to capture not just a scene, but a spirit — the patience, the dignity, and the quiet strength that defines so many Caribbean women. The Market Lady sits centered and calm, surrounded by the fruits of her labor, her eyes focused yet peaceful. There’s a story in her stillness — one of resilience, pride, and purpose.

Every brushstroke was meant to tell that story. The soft folds of her magenta dress, the texture of the stone wall, the vibrant hues of the produce — all come together to create a portrait of balance between struggle and beauty. The sunlight warms the scene with a golden tone, bringing out the lush greens and earthy oranges that define rural Jamaica.

For me, Market Day is more than a painting — it’s a tribute to everyday heroes, to the people who keep communities alive through hard work and love. It’s a reminder that art isn’t only about what we see — it’s about what we feel when we recognize something familiar and true.
